I love the Mormon Messages and the Bible videos; so picking just one was hard for me. This message from Elder Bednar is one of my favorite talks from him. I find myself, all too often, wasting time on Facebook, listening to talk radio, or looking at political news online and ignoring the needs of my family. I find myself doing those things instead of more important things like reading my scriptures. And I can't forget my son's love of the Wii, which we are trying to temper. I love the two questions that Elder Bednar asks.
1. Does technology invite or impede the Holy Ghost?
2. Does it enlarge or restrict your capacity to live, to love, and to serve?
How many times during a day will I be texting and one of my children will take the phone away from me? They recognize it as something that is taking me away from them. Or I will be on the computer and Pratt will hop up on my lap because he wants to be with me and participate with what I am doing. I can't notice the feelings of the Spirit when I have the radio blaring in the background.
I definitely have found good in the technology of today. I love seeing what family and friends are up to. It is a great way to keep in touch. However, I find myself Facebook stalking instead of actually interacting with friends and family. I know that as I pull myself out of the vacuum of technology and use it in a more structured and moderate way, I will feel closer to my family and the Spirit. I don't want to miss the little moments with my children. And I want to be closer to the Lord. I love the last line...that meeting with our Heavenly Father will be a real and not a virtual experience. Preparing for that reality is the most important.
Yeah, I have the Facebook stalking disease. It is hard to overcome.... maybe, though, you can improve by letting go of your love affair with Rush Limbaugh... haha. Then you'll only have to feel guilty about facebook stalking and jamming to tunes. :)
ReplyDeleteMy love affair is with Glenn Beck and his entourage. It is like a comedy show on the radio sometimes. I can't handle Rush that much. :)
ReplyDeleteAh yes, the Beckonites. They are certainly an uptick from the Limbaughians. No worries, so long as you don't watch Lawrence O'donnell, (liberal mormon hater) then I think you are fine.
ReplyDeleteLove it Janae. I always loved technology as a kid and still do but as I have gotten older I have come to appreciate more and more the quiet moments in the morning with my boys or the peaceful runs I take either by myself or with the boys as well. I have come to love quiet time in the scriptures and time to just sit and ponder. It is a good reminder to me to not let the noise of the world shroud or cover the things that matter most. It is neat to see how all of our videos are connected in many ways. Love you!
